PEEK-A-BOO FUN for Infants and Toddlers

Infants and toddlers love to pay peek-a-boo.  It’s a great game for tickling, cuddling, and giggling with your children.  Here are some peek-a-boos for you to try.  These activities will help your child predict events, understand cause & effect, and object permanence.

*Cover your face with your hands.  Slowly open your hands and offer your infant a smiley “Peek-a-boo!”  Reverse the action by covering your infant’s face with his or her hands.

*Cover your face with your hands.  Then open your fingers slowly, accordion-style, to peek at your child.

*Hide behind a chair.  Slowly (or quickly) peek out at your infant from one side of the chair, from over the top of the chair, or from underneath the chair for a silly peek-a-boo surprise.

*Hold up a newspaper as if you were reading it.  Let your infant find you by crashing through the paper and listen to her squeals of delight.

*Make a peek-a-boo mirror by attaching a fabric scrap to the top of the hand mirror.  As your infant looks in the mirror, flip the fabric back and forth.  After enjoying peek-a-boo fun, use the mirror for identifying eyes, nose, chin, etc.

*Glue a picture of a baby’s face on cardboard and laminate it with clear plastic.  Attach a fabric cover.  Then let your infant play with his or her “peek-a-boo pal.”

*Hide your infant under a blanket and pretend that he has disappeared.  Find your infant all at once by pulling off the blanket.  Or make your discovery one part at a time -- “Oh, I’ve found a leg!  Oh my, I’ve found another leg!” etc.

*Puppet Peek-a-Boo.  Stand beside your child, keeping a puppet behind your back.  Enthusiastically pop the puppet up within your child’s view and say ”Peek-a-Boo” with lots of expression.  Repeat as long as your child finds delight in the game.  Be sure not to put the puppet right into baby’s face at first.  If the child is not frightened, use the puppet to nuzzle or tickle the child’s head and neck.

Peek-a-boo Rhyme

Peek-a-boo, Peek-a-boo.

I see you, I see you.

I see your button nose,

I see your tiny toes.

I see you.  Peek-a-boo!
